Everyone is encouraged to come help clean up the park. Volunteers should meet at the Thunderbird Lodge at 10 a.m. before heading out to the trails and day-use areas. \nThis event is scheduled to go till 2 p.m.\, but volunteers are not required to stay the entire time. Those who plan on staying until lunchtime should bring their own lunch. SUMMARY:Wicked Washington Halloween Celebration
DESCRIPTION:10/25/2025 | Washington State Park | De Soto\, MO\n1 p.m. – “Ghosts of Washington’s Past” Trail Walk \nMeet at the entrance of the campground for a 1-mile guided stroll to the special-use area and back. Park staff will share narratives that haunt the history of Washington State Park. The walk will be followed by a campfire and refreshments. \n4 p.m. – Costume Parade \nKids 12 and under are invited to show off their cool costumes at the host site prior to trick-or-treating. All participants will receive a ribbon. \n5-6 p.m. – Kids Trick or Treat \nChildren are welcome to trick or treat through the campground. Participating campsites will be marked with signs and may include basic and electric sites. \nCampers who would like to provide candy should contact the park office or notify the campground host. \n8-9 p.m. – Campsite Decorating Contest Voting \nRegistered campers are encouraged to decorate their campsites with family-friendly Halloween decor. All campers will have the opportunity to vote on the best-decorated site. Voting will take place at the campground host site from 8-9 p.m. After the ballots are counted\, the winners will be announced and prizes will be awarded for the top three sites. \nCampers who would like to enter the contest should notify the campground host. \nRegular camping fees apply\, but the event itself is free. Hear about the historical mining of iron ore\, copper ore\, tiff and galena mined in and around the park\, as well as some of the ways in which the mining industry has impacted local people\, land and commerce. \nFurnace Field Trip – 4 p.m. at the Thunderbird Lodge \nMeet park staff at the Thunderbird Lodge for a tour of the nearby historic iron furnace. Take a short bus ride to the Murphy furnace site\, just south of the main park property\, and then walk about half a mile to view the furnace. See the incredible masonry that has withstood the test of time\, and hear stories about the miners who lived in the boardinghouse that once stood here. \nCampfire\, S’mores and Mining Stories – 7 p.m. in front of the old showerhouse \nJoin park staff for a Labor Day treat while listening to stories of local miners. Learn about the mining history of the park and the surrounding community. Park staff will share information about the history of the park and will discuss what they are doing to preserve the legacy of CCC Company 1743. \nCCC trading card event – 1 p.m. at Thunderbird Lodge \nCome see a display of CCC artifacts and collect a few limited-edition prints of Company 1743 trading cards. \nWiffle ball game – 4 p.m. at Big River Day-Use Area \nMeet at the historic ball field in the Big River Day-Use Area to play Wiffle ball! When they were not busy building park structures\, the members of Company 1743 passed their time by playing a variety of sports\, including baseball. This area has not been used been used an official baseball field in years\, but it hosted many CCC ballgames and was also used by local residents. Come re-create this history while enjoying some outdoor fun. \nAll activities are free and open to the public\, and there is no need to register. Bring along a camera to capture images of the birds you see\, and have a chance to have your photography featured on our social media page. \nPetroglyph tour and botanizing hike – 10 a.m. at the petroglyph site \nWould you like to explore some of the unique plants found around the park? Enjoy the petroglyph glade landscape nestled into the foothills of the Ozarks through a fun botanizing hike. See how many plants you can identify with a scavenger hunt\, and earn bonus points if you identify plants that aren’t even listed! Plus\, go on an optional stroll to see the Native American rock carvings located within the glade area. This will be a low-impact stroll along the glade path and the petroglyph boardwalk. \nFive senses hike – 1 p.m. at the Opossum Track Trail trailhead \nJoin us on Opossum Track Trail for a five senses hike. Walk along the trail and breathe in the scent of wildflowers\, see the vibrant shades of green\, feel the cool rippling of the creek\, and listen to the chirping of the birds. You never know what you’ll encounter as you experience the wonders of the natural world! The hike will cover 2.4 miles of rugged terrain. \nAll activities are free and open to the public\, and there is no need to register. This series will cover both natural and cultural topics\, and some programs will feature guest presenters. Take the opportunity to plant native seeds in a small pot to bring home with you! \nJune 27: Nature Paint Party \nJoin park staff for a paint party! Follow the interpreter’s step-by-step tutorial to create a unique nature-inspired art piece to bring home with you. \nJuly 25: Technical Backpacking \nListen to accounts from an avid hiker and backpacker. This free event will feature a series of environmental activities ranging from volunteer work to an educational presentation and a fun craft. All activities are open to the public\, and there is no need to register. Everyone is welcome to come and go as they please. \nEvent schedule:\n\n10 a.m. – Meet in the Big River Day-Use Area for a tree planting and trash cleanup volunteer opportunity.\nNoon – Disperse for lunch in the Big River Day-Use Area. SUMMARY:First Day Hike: Hike\, Bike and Trike
DESCRIPTION:1/1/2025 | Washington State Park | De Soto\, MO\nWashington State Park will host a First Day Hike on Jan. 1\, 2024\, starting at the Thunderbird Lodge. This year’s theme is “Hike\, Bike and Trike\,” with a choice of two options. Participants can take part in an interpreter-led hike on the rugged 1\,000 Steps Trail\, or they can bring any human-powered wheeled equipment\, such as bikes\, trikes or strollers\, to pedal or walk along the Big River Day-Use Area/Shelter #2 access road. The 1\,000 Steps Trail option will be 1.5 miles\, and the road option will be about 1 mile. A warming station and snacks will be provided after the hike. \n1\,000 Steps Trail was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and consists of large stone steps along natural surfaces. The trail takes hikers through majestic woodlands and along numerous rock outcroppings and leads to a stone overlook shelter. Due to its steep grades and uneven surfaces\, 1\,000 Steps Trail is open to hiking only. No equipment is allowed. \nConversely\, the access road is paved and open to all equipment. It is also a more accessible option for hiking. This route provides views of the Big River and the open river bottom. \nBoth options are free and open to all ages. Participants are encouraged to dress accordingly for this outdoor winter experience. Pets on leashes are welcome\, provided they are cleaned up after and are respectful of other participants. \nFor more information\, contact Washington State Park at 636-586-5768.
