SUMMARY:Third Annual Missouri Preservation Symposium
DESCRIPTION:5/13/2026 and 5/14/2026 | Joplin\, Mo.\nThe third annual Missouri Preservation Symposium will take place in Joplin\, Missouri\, on Wednesday\, May 13\, and Thursday\, May 14. This event is presented by the Missouri State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and cosponsored by the City of Joplin\, Downtown Joplin Alliance\, Missouri Southern State University\, the Joplin Historical Neighborhoods Museum\, Missouri Preservation and Crossland Construction. \nThe event will begin with an opening reception at the Schifferdecker and Zelleken homes on Wednesday evening. The following day’s activities will take place on the campus of Missouri Southern State University. These will include a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the historic Buchanan Home\, as well as the symposium itself. The symposium will have two different tracks: historic tax credits and community preservation. The keynote speakers will be Jeff and Carolina Neal of Neal Group Construction. \nRegistration is required and can be completed online. The registration deadline is April 30. The standard registration fee is $25. For students\, it is $10. This family event offers recreational activities for beginners to try out with professionals. Come enjoy a beautiful spring weekend of fishing\, rock climbing\, birding and more. Participants will also have the option to camp with us overnight! \nRegistration is required\, and there are fees and age restrictions. DESCRIPTION:March 28\, 2026 | Roaring River State Park | Cassville\, Mo.\nHave you ever wanted to trout fish but don’t know where to begin? Do you want to gain confidence fishing Missouri’s trout parks? If so\, you’re in luck! Join Missouri State Parks and the Missouri Department of Conservation as we teach the basics of trout fishing using both spin and fly-fishing tackle at Roaring River State Park.  \nThe 2026 program will take place on March 26\, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The first half of the program will cover trout fishing rules and regulations\, gear selection\, and tackle rigging. The afternoon portion will feature on-stream fishing with seasoned mentors in Zone 1. The program will begin in the CCC Lodge.  \nLearn2 Trout Fish is free and open to everyone ages 8 and up. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited to 20 participants\, and registration is required. Registration for the 2026 class opens on Feb. 27 and can be completed online. \nDaily tag and fishing permit requirements will be waived for participants during the class\, and all equipment will be provided. Anyone wanting to fish on their own after 3 p.m. must have a daily trout tag and a valid Missouri fishing permit. Tags and permits are available for purchase at the park store. \nA signed waiver must be presented upon arrival at the program. DESCRIPTION:The opening of the catch-and-keep trout fishing season on March 1 is an important Missouri tradition\, marking the beginning of a season that runs until Oct. 31. The season officially begins at 6:30 a.m. at Bennett Spring State Park near Lebanon\, Montauk State Park near Salem\, and Roaring River State Park near Cassville. The symposium will take place at the Lewis and Clark State Office Building in Jefferson City\, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The theme of the symposium is “Historic Preservation as a Tool for Economic Development\,” with a focus on federal and state historic tax credits. \nThe Keynote speaker for the event will be St. Louis real estate developer and historic preservation advocate Steven Stogel\, talking about “Funding Your Preservation Project\,” with additional financial analysis from Kandi Jackson\, managing director at the National Trust’s Community Investment Corporation\, and Sean McKessy\, a tax credit specialist at Rubin Brown. Additional speakers will include historic preservation consultant Deb Sheals and representatives from SHPO\, the Department of Economic Development\, the Brownfields program\, and the nonprofit organizations Missouri Preservation and Missouri Main Street. \nSpace is limited for this event\, and advance registration is required. Registration can be completed online between March 15 and April 15. There is a $25 registration fee\, which covers admission to the symposium and a catered lunch.
