SUMMARY:First Day Hike: Hike through History
DESCRIPTION:1/1/2026 | First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site and Katy Trail State Park | St. Charles\, MO.\nJoin First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site staff on Jan. 1\, 2026\, for a First Day Hike through history. First Day Hikes are promoted by America’s State Parks and are held at parks across the country at the start of each year. \nThis guided hike will take participants along the iconic Katy Trail\, down St. Charles’ historic Main Street\, and through Missouri’s first Capitol building. Staff will provide a tour as we take in views of the Missouri River and downtown St. Charles from the Katy Trail and Frontier Park and discuss the history leading up to Missouri’s struggle for statehood. \nThe hike will cover about 2 miles on the Katy Trail and Main Street. The Katy Trail has a flat\, gravel surface\, while Main Street is composed of bricks\, making it bumpy in places. The hike will also feature a tour of the Capitol\, which has a number of stairs leading to the second floor. There is no heat in the Capitol. \nIt may be windy and chilly during the hike. Participants are encouraged to wear appropriate shoes\, dress for the weather\, and bring water and snacks. This event is free and open to the public. All ages are welcome\, but minors should be accompanied by an adult. \nRegistration is required and can be completed by using the link provided here. A performance by Rick Thum and Friends in the warm glow of the candlelit legislative chambers will evoke memories of a historic past and bring to life some well-known Christmas songs and the stories behind them. These merry melodies will surely get you in the holiday spirit. \nThe first concert will begin at 4:30 p.m.\, and the second one will start at 7 p.m. Both shows will take place upstairs in the Capitol. Attendees are encouraged to dress warmly\, as the building does not have central heating. \nYou must purchase tickets in order to attend. Tickets will go on sale Wednesday\, Nov. 12\, at 10 a.m.\, with a price of $14 per ticket. Tickets will be sold in person at the historic site’s interpretive center and by phone. Cash\, cards and checks will be accepted for purchases made in person; only cards will be accepted for purchases made by phone. \nThere will be a limit of 100 tickets overall (50 per concert) and four per family. DESCRIPTION:10/18/2025 | First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site | St. Charles\, MO\nJoin us at First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site for a fun day of archaeology and history. The third Saturday of October is International Archaeology Day\, and October 2025 marks the 199th anniversary of the capital’s move from St. Charles to Jefferson City. We will be commemorating both occasions\, with free self-guided tours of the First Capitol and family-friendly archaeology activities in the backyard. \nThese activities will be held in conjunction with the historic site’s annual public meeting. The meeting will be held in an open house format and will feature information on recent projects and events. You’re encouraged to provide feedback\, ask questions\, and learn more about the site. \nMeanwhile\, the city of St. Charles will be hosting its Legends and Lanterns Halloween festival. Be sure to check it out while you’re in town! \nEvent times and locations:\n\nSelf-guided tours and archaeology activities: noon to 3:30 p.m.\, First Capitol and backyard\nPublic meeting: 1-2 p.m.\, historic site grounds \n\nEvent flyer\nInput from the public is important to Missouri State Parks. These public meetings\, which are being held for all state parks and historic sites\, help create two-way communication with the public. This event is part of an ongoing series of basket weaving classes held at the site. Each class runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and begins in the interpretive center. All materials are provided\, although you may want to bring snacks and a drink.  \nClass size is limited\, and registration is required. Registration for the January through June classes opens Jan. 3\, while registration for the July to November classes opens June 2. Registration will be available online through our reservation website. You may sign up for any day that a particular class is being offered. You may also sign up for multiple classes. Join us in the interpretive center at First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site to make a sculpture of Missouri’s state bird. No\, it’s not the cardinal – it’s the eastern bluebird. During this class\, you will you learn some basic needle felting techniques\, as well as information about bluebirds. All materials will be provided\, but you may want to bring a snack or drink. \nSpace is limited to 12 people\, and online registration is required. Registration opens April 1 and costs $10. Children can pick up a passport and journey through the 1820s while participating in hands-on activities to earn prizes.
