SUMMARY:Frozen Chosin Challenge
DESCRIPTION:12/5/2025 to 12/7/2025 | Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park | Middle Brook\, MO\nFrom Dec. 5-7\, Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park will host a series of winter treks collectively known as the Frozen Chosin Challenge. Sponsored by the Missouri Korean War Veterans Memorial\, this event is designed to bring awareness to the Korean War – specifically the Battle of Chosin Reservoir – and its participants. All proceeds from the event support the Missouri Korean War Veterans Memorial. \nThis event consists of three separate challenges events over three days: the Chosin Challenge\, the Devil Dog Challenge and the Warrior Challenge. The Chosin Challenge and the Devil Dog Challenge are rigorous backpacking and bivouacking treks along Goggins Mountain Equestrian Trail and a portion of the Ozark Trail. The Warrior Challenge is as an accessible walk along the Black River and Johnson’s Shut-Ins’ paved trail system. The purpose of the event is not for participants to compete against each other but to work as teams and ensure that each person completes the course. \nFor more information or to register for a course\, please visit the official event listing on the Missouri Korean war Veterans Memorial website. Paid registration is required for each course\, and participants are expected to review all the information about their course. A brief summary of each course is provided below; more information is available on the official website. \nCourses:\nChosin Challenge – rigorous 40-mile trek\nStart time: staggered start from 7-10 a.m. on Friday\, Dec. 5 \nEnd time: 3 p.m. on Sunday\, Dec. 7 \nThe Chosin Challenge Course is a rigorous 40-mile winter trek spanning three days and two nights. This course requires a two-night bivouac. It uses Goggins Mountain Equestrian Trail and a portion of the Ozark Trail\, including a section in Taum Sauk Mountain State Park. \nThe course begins in the Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park campground. It takes participants along a 28.5-mile journey outbound across Goggins Mountain and along the Ozark Trail. Challengers will traverse ancient mountains\, ford the Black River\, and ascend and descend the state’s highest waterfall and highest point. The trail then goes back along 11.5 miles through the Devil’s Tollgate\, long ascents and another winter river crossing back to Johnson’s Shut-Ins. \nThis route was designed to replicate the conditions that service members endured during their 16-day 78-mile fighting withdrawal in temperatures as low as 35 degrees below zero. \nDevil Dog Challenge – difficult 17-mile trek\nStart time: staggered start from 7-10 a.m. on Saturday\, Dec. 6 \nEnd time: 3 p.m. on Sunday\, Dec. 7 \nA shorter version of the Chosin Challenge course\, Devil Dog begins at the trailhead in the Johnson’s Shut-Ins campground and ends in the park’s day-use area. Like Chosin Challenge\, it features rugged mountain terrain and crosses the Black River\, but it is less than half the distance and requires only one winter bivouac. \nWarrior Challenge – accessible 3.6-mile walk\nStart time: 9 a.m. on Sunday\, Dec. 7 \nEnd time: noon on Sunday\, Dec. 7 \nBeginning near the trailhead in the Johnson’s Shut-Ins campground\, this 3.6-mile course traverses open fields before crossing under Highway N and over a bridge at Cope Hollow. It then winds along the Black River to the shut-Ins and a 0.3-mile boardwalk trail above the flowing waters of the shut-ins. The trail then follows the Black River Trail System back to the Johnson’s Shut-Ins day-use area and the finish line. \nTo learn more about how Missouri State Parks supports our military community\, please visit our Military Benefits and Services page. \nJohnson’s Shut-Ins State Park is located at: \n148 Taum Sauk Trail\, Middle Brook\, MO | 573-546-2450 \nAssociated Activities\n

SUMMARY:Guided Bison Saunter
DESCRIPTION:11/1/2025 | Prairie State Park | Mindenmines\, MO\nNational Bison Day is the first Saturday in November. This day is set aside to honor the bison as our national mammal. This 1-ton beast once roamed the plains and prairies of North America 60 million strong before we nearly wiped them out. Join us on a guided bison saunter to see the prairie in its autumnal glory\, get a chance to see some bison. We will meet at the Regal Tallgrass Prairie Nature Center and begin the saunter at 1 p.m. \n“What is a saunter?” you say? According to Merriam-Webster\, “saunter” means “to walk about in an idle or leisurely manner : STROLL” (that is\, to walk at a slower pace to take in all the surroundings). That sounds better than a hike. Come out and get that “prairie feeling” from centuries past\, and while you are at it\, get some exercise. Prairie State Park encompasses almost 4\,000 acres of tallgrass prairie\, which once covered 33% of Missouri. Now\, less than half of 1% remains. \nThe bison are getting ready for winter and looking forward to some cooler temperatures. Visitors should be prepared for at least a 2-mile saunter over uneven terrain. Since we won’t know the location of the bison until the morning of the event\, bringing water\, snacks\, a hat and sunscreen and wearing sturdy shoes is recommended. November weather can be unpredictable\, so please prepare for it. Binoculars can be useful in watching the bison and other wildlife. \nDue to the unique and rare diversity of life preserved at Prairie State Park\, pets are not allowed on park trails\, EXCEPT for Path of the Earth People and Path of the Sky People. Bison graze freely in the park\, and this regulation protects both you and your pet. You are welcome to bring your pet to the park’s campground and picnic area\, but you must follow Missouri State Parks’ pet rules. This applies to all types of pets except service animals assisting people with disabilities. \nThis event is free and open to the public. However\, registration is required\, and there is a limit of 30 participants. To register\, call the park office at 417-843-6711. \nEvent time: 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.\nTo see more events like this\, please visit our guided hikes page. \nPrairie State Park is located at: \n128 NW 150th Lane\, Mindenmines\, MO | 417-843-6711 \nAssociated Activities
