DESCRIPTION:1/1/2026 | Harry S Truman State Park | Warsaw\, MO.\nHarry S Truman State Park will be hosting a First Day Hike on New Year’s Day 2026! First Day Hikes are promoted by America’s State Parks and are held at parks across the country at the start of each year. \nThis moderately challenging guided hike will take place on 1000th Mile Trail and cover a distance of 1 mile. This stretch of trail is significant because it was the 1\,000th mile of trail installed in Missouri’s state park system. The trail travels through a glade area\, climbs a large bluff\, passes through woodlands\, and then returns to the trailhead. There is a good possibility that participants will see white-tailed deer\, bald eagles\, wild turkey\, and other local and migratory birds. The views from the bluff are some of the best in the state and a must-see for nature lovers of all kinds. You will have a sweeping view of Truman Lake\, Truman Dam and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers visitor center. \nThe event is free\, open to the public\, and suitable for all ages. Participants are encouraged to dress for the weather and bring water and snacks. DESCRIPTION:1/1/2026 | Rock Bridge Memorial State Park | Columbia\, MO.\nFirst Day Hikes are promoted by America’s State Parks and are held at parks across the country at the start of each year. Rock Bridge Memorial State Park is once again hosting several different First Day Hikes. \nFirst Day Hike on Sinkhole and Devil’s Icebox Trails (Afternoon)\nThis 1.75-mile hike will be interspersed with stops to learn about the history and geology of the area. It will go up one long gradual hill on the dirt and gravel terrain of Sinkhole Trail\, through the woods\, and then use the boardwalk steps of Devil’s Icebox Trail. The level of difficulty will be moderate. Features and topics along the way will include the 19th century town of Rockbridge Mills and its whiskey distillery\, the founding of the park\, Ingrum Spring\, sinkholes\, the Devil’s Icebox\, and the Rock Bridge. Depending on the water level\, participants may have the option to enter the Rock Bridge and the mouth of Devil’s Icebox. \nThis hike is hike is not stroller accessible and is not recommended for children 4 and under unless they are carried by an adult. We prefer that dogs do not accompany us on the hike. Participants should bring water\, dress for the weather\, and wear shoes that are suitable for muddy or snowy conditions. Rock Bridge Memorial State Park is once again hosting several different First Day Hikes. \nFirst Day History Hike in Gans Creek Wild Area\nLearn about local history from the 1800s during this 2.5-mile scenic hike in Gans Creek Wild Area. This moderately difficult hike will go off-trail through open woods for about half a mile. Enjoy vistas from a 100-foot-high bluff overlooking Gans Creek and from a shelter cave halfway up on a bluff. Explore this cave that likely was used by Native Americans. If the creek is dry\, we will walk on its bedrock and gravel bars for about 300 meters. Visit the ruins of the Reyburn cabin and hear readings from an 1891 diary of a gentleman who lived nearby. \nThis event is for ages 10 and up. We prefer that dogs do not join us. Participants should bring water\, dress for the weather\, and wear shoes that are suitable for muddy or snowy conditions. \nWe will meet at the Wagon Wheel Trailhead at noon. Parking is available at the trailhead and along Bearfield Road\, which dead-ends at the trailhead. DESCRIPTION:1/1/2026 | Bryant Creek State Park | Ava\, MO.\nJoin us for a 3.25-mile guided hike at Bryant Creek State Park. Located just 30 minutes southeast of Ava\, Missouri\, Bryant Creek State Park is home to impressively large oaks and shortleaf pines spanning rugged\, steeply dissected river hills that front the stream for which it is named. \nThis will be a loop hike\, taking place on a section of Pike Hollow Trail. Pike Hollow trail is a rugged natural-surface trail of easy to moderate difficulty. The hike will begin at the park’s main trailhead. This hike is free and open to the public; however\, it is not recommended for children 4 and under unless they are carried by an adult. Pets are welcome but must be leashed. \nParticipants should bring water and snacks\, dress for the weather\, and wear good shoes for hiking. A track chair is available for individuals with mobility issues\, though it can only go on the first mile of the hike to the overlook. We will meet at the visitor center at noon and then drive to the Fireside Store parking lot to begin the hike. This moderately difficult hike will use Bluff View Trail\, White Connector 1 and River Trail. The hike will cover approximately 2.5 miles over the course of about two and a half hours. \nFeatures along the way will include woodlands\, glades\, river bottoms and bluffs\, and two trail shelters built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. In addition\, there may be opportunities to spot wildlife such as deer\, bald eagles and maybe even a river otter. DESCRIPTION:1/1/2026 | Onondaga Cave State Park\nJoin park staff for a guided hike of Vilander Bluff Trail on New Year’s Day. This moderately difficult hike will cover 1.3 miles over the course of about two hours.  \nThe hike will start at the Vilander Bluff Trail trailhead\, which is about 30 minutes east of the main park property. The trailhead is located along Thickety Ford Road\, north of Highway N\, near Bourbon\, Missouri. \nThis trail is named for Vilander Bluff\, the highest bluff along the Meramec River. The trail provides access to Vilander Bluff Natural Area\, a 206-acre tract known for its ancient eastern red cedars. Some of these cedars\, from 300 to 500 years old\, grow out of the rocks along the bluff. The trail features an outstanding example of a dry cliff community that contains two very rare species of lichens. It also takes hikers through a dry chert woodland and chert savanna before returning to the parking lot. \nYou should expect to encounter some loose rocks and steep terrain during the hike. Be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes\, dress for the weather\, and bring plenty of water and snacks. All ages are welcome\, but the trail is not accessible for strollers or wheelchairs. Camp Sherwood was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps and opened to the public in 1937. The camp is divided into four villages and contains 53 original buildings and structures. The majority of the camp was designated a historic district by the National Park Service in 1985.\n\nWe will meet at the park’s visitor center at 10 a.m. for hot chocolate and restroom breaks before driving up to Camp Sherwood. The tour will begin in the camp around 10:30 a.m. The walk will be about 0.6 mile along gravel roads. Please dress for the weather and bring water.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:1/1/2026 | Rock Bridge Memorial State Park | Columbia\, MO.\nFirst Day Hikes are promoted by America’s State Parks and are held at parks across the country at the start of each year. Rock Bridge Memorial State Park is once again hosting several different First Day Hikes. \nFirst Day Hike on Sinkhole and Devil’s Icebox Trails (Morning)\nThis 1.75-mile hike will be interspersed with stops to learn about the history and geology of the area. It will go up one long gradual hill on the dirt and gravel terrain of Sinkhole Trail\, through the woods\, and then use the boardwalk steps of Devil’s Icebox Trail. The level of difficulty will be moderate. Features and topics along the way will include the 19th century town of Rockbridge Mills and its whiskey distillery\, the founding of the park\, Ingrum Spring\, sinkholes\, the Devil’s Icebox\, and the Rock Bridge. Depending on the water level\, participants may have the option to enter the Rock Bridge and the mouth of Devil’s Icebox. \nThis hike is hike is not stroller accessible and is not recommended for children 4 and under unless they are carried by an adult. We prefer that dogs do not accompany us on the hike. Participants should bring water\, dress for the weather\, and wear shoes that are suitable for muddy or snowy conditions. We will meet at the trailhead at 9 am. \nLocated in the southwest portion of the park\, Sortor’s Bluff Trail runs through one of the property’s most remote sections. It offers great views of the lake and plenty of opportunities to experience local wildlife\, including bald eagles. The northern section of the trail consists of a 3.3-mile loop with a 0.4-mile spur leading to a scenic overlook of the lake. The trail features natural surfaces and is considered moderately difficult. Hikers may encounter loose rocks\, slippery surfaces\, drop-offs\, and roots or downed vegetation. DESCRIPTION:12/20/2025 | Roaring River State Park | Cassville\, MO.\nRoaring River’s second annual Christmas Candlelight and Cookie Stroll will take place on Saturday\, Dec. 20. From 5:30-8:30 p.m.\, hundreds of luminaries will light the banks of the river\, evoking a sense of peace and wonder.  \nThere will also be a variety of activities and displays throughout the park: \n\nMeet and greet with Santa in the CCC Lodge\, 5:30-8:30 p.m.\nChristmas specials at the park store\, 5:30-8:30 p.m.\nChristmas tree display at the Emory Melton Inn\, 5:30-8:30 p.m.\nCivilian Conservation Corps living history display at the amphitheater\, 5:30-8:30 p.m.\nReadings of “The Night Before Christmas” at the amphitheater\, 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.\n\nAdmission to the event is free and open to the public. Visitors should dress for the weather and bring an additional light source\, such as a flashlight or lantern.
