SUMMARY:Guided Bison Saunter
DESCRIPTION:1/3/2026 | Prairie State Park | Mindenmines\, MO\nPrairie State Park will host a guided bison saunter starting at the Regal Tallgrass Prairie Nature Center at 1 p.m. \n“What is a saunter?” you say? According to Merriam-Webster\, “saunter” means “to walk about in an idle or leisurely manner : STROLL” (that is\, to walk at a slower pace to take in all the surroundings). That sounds better than a hike. Come out and get that “prairie feeling” from centuries past\, and while you are at it\, get some exercise. Prairie State Park encompasses almost 4\,000 acres of tallgrass prairie\, which once covered 33% of Missouri. Now\, less than half of 1% remains. \nWinter is here\, and the bison are ready for its biting winds and bitter cold. We will brave the conditions to see the bison in their natural habitat. Visitors should be prepared for a 2-mile saunter over uneven terrain. Participants are encouraged to bring water\, snacks and binoculars and wear sturdy shoes and a hat. January weather can be unpredictable and windy; please dress accordingly. \nDue to the unique and rare diversity of life preserved at Prairie State Park\, pets are not allowed on park trails\, EXCEPT for Path of the Earth People and Path of the Sky People. Bison graze freely in the park\, and this regulation protects both you and your pet. You are welcome to bring your pet to the park’s campground and picnic area\, but you must follow Missouri State Parks’ pet rules. This applies to all types of pets except service animals assisting people with disabilities. \nThis event is free and open to the public. However\, registration is required\, and there is a limit of 30 participants. To register\, call the park office at 417-843-6711. \nEvent time: 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.\nTo see more events like this\, please visit our guided hikes page. \nPrairie State Park is located at: \n128 NW 150th Lane\, Mindenmines\, MO | 417-843-6711

SUMMARY:First Day Hike and Bird-Watching on Grassland Trail
DESCRIPTION:1/1/2026 | Rock Bridge Memorial State Park | Columbia\, MO.\nFirst Day Hikes are promoted by America’s State Parks and are held at parks across the country at the start of each year. Rock Bridge Memorial State Park is once again hosting several different First Day Hikes. \nFirst Day Hike and Bird-Watching on Grassland Trail\nJoin on us New Year’s Day to hike and look for birds along Grassland Trail. This area provides views of a restored prairie\, open sky and sinkholes. Members of the Columbia Audubon Society will lead this 2-mile hike with the plan to look in the mixed grassland\, shrub\, and forest-edge habitats for sparrows\, raptors\, and any other fauna or flora of interest. This will be a fairly easy hike with a leisurely pace along relatively flat terrain. \nAround dusk\, hike leaders will return to the parking lot for an optional extra half hour of watching and listening for a last pulse of daytime bird activity\, as well as possible evening birds\, including owls. This is also a good opportunity to watch the sun go down on the first day of the new year. \nThis event is for ages 8 and up. We prefer that dogs do not join us. Participants should bring water\, dress for the weather\, and wear shoes that are suitable for muddy or snowy conditions. \nWe will meet at the Grassland Trail trailhead at 2:30 p.m. Parking is available at the trailhead and along Rock Bridge Lane\, a wide gravel road that leads to the trailhead parking lot. Restrooms are not available in this area. \nThis event is free\, but space is limited and registration is required. Please register using the link provided here. If the hike is canceled\, an announcement will be emailed to registrants and posted on the park’s Facebook page and the Park and Site Status Map. \nFor more information about First Day Hikes at Rock Bridge Memorial State Park\, please call the park office at 573-449-7402. \nWhen and Where:\n\nStart time: 2:30 p.m.\nEnd time: 4:30 p.m.\nMeet at the Grassland Trail trailhead (GPS coordinates: 38.865618\, -92.321497).\n\nRock Bridge Memorial State Park contact information:\n\nAddress: 5901 S.
