DESCRIPTION:12/6/2025 | Watkins Woolen Mill State Historic Site | Lawson\, MO.\nCelebrate Christmas at Watkins Woolen Mill State Park and Historic Site on Saturday\, Dec. 6\, from 2-7 p.m. \nEveryone is welcome to view displays in the visitor center\, listen to Christmas music from the time period\, and take home a craft. They can also walk out on to the historic site and see the lane and the outside of the Watkins house lit up with lanterns and candles for Christmas. Wassail and hot cider will be available for all guests. \nA limited number of tickets will be available for guided tours of the Watkins house. DESCRIPTION:10/11/2025 | Watkins Woolen Mill State Historic Site | Lawson\, MO\nJoin costumed interpreters at Watkins Woolen Mill State Historic Site as they demonstrate rural life of the 1870s. See displays of blacksmithing and woodstove cooking\, and try your hand at rag doll making\, rope making and old-time games. Other activities may include corn shelling\, crosscut sawing\, cider pressing and Victorian era gardening. All activities will take place outdoors\, so be sure to dress for the weather. \nAdmission to the event is free and does not require registration. Guided tours of the antebellum Watkins home and the historic woolen mill will be available for a small fee. SUMMARY:Moses Dickson and the African American Fight for Equality in Gilded Age Missouri
DESCRIPTION:6/14/25 | Watkins Woolen Mill State Historic Site | Lawson\, MO\nIn this program\, presenter Jeffery Smith\, Ph.D.\, will use the history of Father Dickson Cemetery to discuss the relationship between prominent African American figure Moses Dickson (1824-1901) and Black cemeteries in the state. \nDickson was among the best-known African Americans in Missouri in the second half of the 19th century. He was an abolitionist and a minister\, and he founded one of the largest African American service organizations in the South after the Civil War. He was a prominent member of the Missouri Republican Party and published articles and delivered speeches on an array of topics. In short\, he was among the most compelling characters in Missouri in his lifetime. \nThis presentation will take place in the AV room of the park’s visitor center. SUMMARY:Hispano Capitalista of the Santa Fe Trail
DESCRIPTION:In 1821\, Missouri became a state\, and Mexico became a nation\, the latter having gained its independence from Spain. Shortly after achieving independence\, Mexico opened trade with the United States. Hispano and American entrepreneurs were ready and able to make the Santa Fe Trail a two-way international trade route and a conduit for cultural exchange between the two nations. This presentation will explore the role of Hispano capitalists who facilitated the success of the Santa Fe Trail. \nThe presentation will take place in the AV room of the park’s visitor center.
