SUMMARY:Tzi-Sho Prairie Natural Area Saunter
DESCRIPTION:4/18/2026 | Prairie State Park | Mindenmines\, Mo.\nMissouri’s Natural Areas represent some of the best – and last – examples of our state’s original landscapes. You’re invited to explore one of these areas during a guided saunter on Path of the Sky People at Prairie State Park. This 1.7-mile loop traverses the former Tzi-Sho Prairie Natural Area and the current Regal Tallgrass Prairie Natural Area. \nThis event commemorates the 50th anniversary of Tzi-Sho Prairie Natural Area\, which was designated in 1976. Tzi-Sho Prairie was eventually combined with three other Natural Areas to form Regal Tallgrass Prairie Natural Area. The current Natural Area not only surrounds Path of the Sky People but comprises more than 90% of the park property. \nParticipants are encouraged to wear sturdy footwear and bring water\, snacks\, insect repellent\, a hat and sunscreen. This event is free and open to the public\, and there is no registration. More information can be obtained by calling the park’s nature center at 417-843-6711. \nDue to the unique and rare diversity of life preserved at Prairie State Park\, pets are not allowed on park trails\, EXCEPT for Path of the Earth People and Path of the Sky People. Bison graze freely in the park\, and this regulation protects both you and your pet. You are welcome to bring your pet to the park’s campground and picnic area\, but you must follow Missouri State Parks’ pet rules. This applies to all types of pets except service animals assisting people with disabilities. \nEvent Times and Location:\n\nStart: 10 a.m.\nEnd: noon\nMeet at the Path of the Sky People trailhead within Prairie State Park.\n\nGPS coordinates for trailhead: 37.50686\, -94.52607\nPark address: 128 NW 150th Lane\, Mindenmines\, Mo.\n\n\n\nFor More Information:\n\nCall Prairie State Park’s Regal Tallgrass Prairie Nature Center at 417-843-6711.\n\nRelated Links:\n\nGuided hikes at Missouri state parks and historic sites

SUMMARY:Guided Bison Saunter
DESCRIPTION:4/4/2026 | Prairie State Park | Mindenmines\, MO\nPrairie State Park will host a guided bison saunter starting at the Regal Tallgrass Prairie Nature Center at 10 a.m. \n“What is a saunter?” you say? According to Merriam-Webster\, “saunter” means “to walk about in an idle or leisurely manner : STROLL” (that is\, to walk at a slower pace to take in all the surroundings). That sounds better than a hike. Come out and get that “prairie feeling” from centuries past\, and while you are at it\, get some exercise. Prairie State Park encompasses almost 4\,000 acres of tallgrass prairie\, which once covered 33% of Missouri. Now\, less than half of 1% remains. \nSpring is here\, and the bison are ready for fresh grass. We will journey out to see the bison in their natural habitat. Visitors should be prepared for a 2-mile saunter over uneven terrain. Participants are encouraged to bring water\, snacks\, sunscreen\, insect repellent and binoculars and wear sturdy shoes and a hat. April weather can be unpredictable and windy; please dress accordingly. \nThis event is free and open to the public. However\, registration is required\, and there is a limit of 30 participants. To register\, call the park office at 417-843-6711. \nEvent time: 10 a.m. to noon\nTo see more events like this\, please visit our guided hikes page. \nPrairie State Park is located at: \n128 NW 150th Lane\, Mindenmines\, MO | 417-843-6711

SUMMARY:East Drywood Creek Natural Area Saunter
DESCRIPTION:9/20/2025 | Prairie State Park | Mindenmines\, MO\nMissouri’s designated natural areas represent some of the best – and last – examples of our state’s original landscapes. You’re invited to explore one of these areas during a guided saunter at Prairie State Park. This 2.6-mile saunter will use sections of Drover’s and Sandstone trails to traverse the former East Drywood Creek Natural Area. SUMMARY:Guided Bison Saunter
DESCRIPTION:9/6/2025 | Prairie State Park | Mindenmines\, MO\nPrairie State Park will host a guided bison saunter starting at the Regal Tallgrass Prairie Nature Center at 10 a.m. \nFall is fast approaching\, and it is a great time to visit. Temperatures will be falling\, and the bison will be growing their winter fur soon. Wildflowers are blooming and getting ready to set seed. There is a lot of activity on the prairie this time of year. Visitors should be prepared for at least a 2-mile saunter over uneven terrain. Since we won’t know the location of the bison until the morning of the event\, bringing water\, snacks\, a hat\, insect repellent and sunscreen and wearing sturdy shoes is recommended. September weather can be unpredictable\, so please prepare for it. Binoculars can be useful in watching the bison and other wildlife. \nThis event is free and open to the public. However\, registration is required\, and there is a limit of 30 participants. To register\, call the park office at 417-843-6711. \nEvent time: 10 a.m. – noon \nClick here to see more guided saunters and hikes at Missouri State Parks. \nPrairie State Park is located at: \n128 NW 150th Lane\, Mindenmines\, MO | 417-843-6711 \nAssociated Activities

SUMMARY:Hug a Herp Day
DESCRIPTION:6/21/2025 | Prairie State Park | Mindenmines\, MO\nLizards need love\, too! So do snakes\, turtles\, frogs\, toads and salamanders. You may think these animals are creepy\, but that might just be due to a lack of positive experiences. So\, come learn more about these slimy and scaly critters and the good they do at Prairie State Park’s Hug a Herp Day. \nPark representatives will help dispel myths and rumors about reptiles and amphibians (collectively known as “herps”)\, while letting visitors see them up close and touch them if they’re so inclined. Not brave enough to touch one? Then you can make an amphibian or reptile craft to take home instead. All activities are free and open to the public\, and there is no need to register. For more information\, call 417-843-6711. \nDue to the unique and rare diversity of life preserved at Prairie State Park\, pets are not allowed on park trails except for Path of the Earth People and Path of the Sky People. Bison graze freely in the park and this regulation protects both guests and their pets. Pets are welcome in the park’s campground and picnic area\, but must follow Missouri State Parks’ pet rules. This applies to all types of pets except service animals assisting guests with disabilities. \nProgram time: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.\nPrairie State Park is located at: \n128 NW 150th Lane\, Mindenmines\, MO | 417-843-6711 \nAssociated Activities\n

SUMMARY:Guided Bison Saunter
DESCRIPTION:6/7/2025 | Prairie State Park | Mindenmines\, MO\nPrairie State Park will host a guided bison saunter starting at the Regal Tallgrass Prairie Nature Center at 10 a.m. \nSummer is almost here\, and the prairie is exploding with gorgeous colors and sounds! Wildflowers and birds abound. Bison and their calves are moving about and exploring. Visitors should be prepared for at least a 2-mile saunter over uneven terrain. Since we won’t know the location of the bison the morning of the event\, bringing water\, snacks\, insect repellent\, a hat and sunscreen and wearing sturdy shoes is recommended. In addition\, binoculars can be useful in watching the bison and other wildlife. June weather can be unpredictable\, so please prepare for it. \nThis event is free and open to the public. However\, registration is required\, and there is a limit of 30 participants. To register\, call the park office at 417-843-6711. \nEvent time: 10 a.m. – noon\nThis event is being held in conjunction with American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day initiative. For more information about this initiative and a complete list of associated events at Missouri State Parks\, please visit our National Trails Day page. \nTo see more guided saunters and hikes\, please visit our guided hikes page. \nPrairie State Park is located at: \n128 NW 150th Lane\, Mindenmines\, MO | 417-843-6711 \nAssociated Activities
