DESCRIPTION:1/1/2026 | Nathan and Olive Boone Homestead State Historic Site | Ash Grove\, MO.\nJoin site staff for our annual First Day Hike at Nathan and Olive Boone Homestead State Historic Site. First Day Hikes are promoted by America’s State Parks and are held at parks at the start of each year. \nThis moderately difficult guided hike will cover portions of all three of the site’s hiking trails – Spring Box\, Interpretive and Prairie View – for a total of 2.5 miles. Participants will hike through a once-thriving 19th century homestead and learn about the history of the homestead and the surrounding area. The hike will depart from the picnic shelter at 10 a.m. \nThis family-friendly event is free\, open to the public\, and suitable for all ages. Registration is required\, and participation is limited to 35 people. To register\, please use the link provided here.  \nIf the hike is canceled\, an announcement will be emailed to registrants and posted on the historic site’s Facebook page and the Park and Site Status Map. As the day fades slowly into night\, watch the site come aglow with lanterns and listen to the sounds of Christmas from the Echoes of Dogwood Mountain dulcimer group. \nAll activities will take place in and around the Boone home. DESCRIPTION:What do you get when you combine history and the outdoors? A history hike! \nYou are invited to learn about women whose lives touched the Nathan and Olive Boone Homestead and the surrounding community while hiking with site staff. This 2-mile hike will take visitors throughout the site and will make frequent stops along the way to allow staff to share stories of family\, survival and intrigue. This free event will begin at the covered picnic shelter near the site office at 1 p.m. \nParticipants are encouraged to wear sturdy hiking shoes\, dress for the weather\, bring water and use insect repellent. Registration is requested and can be completed online or by calling the office at 417-751-3266.
