SUMMARY:First Day Hike
DESCRIPTION:1/1/2026 | Jefferson Landing State Historic Site/Missouri State Museum | Jefferson City\, MO.\nJoin Missouri State Museum staff for an urban exploration around Jefferson Landing State Historic Site\, the Capitol complex\, and Jefferson City Parks’ Deborah Cooper Park on Adrian’s Island. Staff will provide a tour as we take in the views of the Missouri River and the historic buildings. The hike will cover about 1.5 miles on sidewalks with some slight-to-moderate inclines\, including the Bicentennial Bridge. \nIt may be windy and chilly during the hike. Participants are encouraged to wear appropriate shoes\, dress warmly\, and bring water. Museum staff will be using a sound system that works with your favorite old-school headphones with a standard 3.5-millimeter headphone jack to help you hear all the great info. A limited supply of disposable earbuds will be available. \nThis event is free and open to the public. All ages are welcome\, but families with small children are encouraged to use strollers to keep pace with the group. Leashed pets are also allowed. \n Registration is required and can be completed by using the link provided here. If the hike is canceled\, an announcement will be emailed to registrants and posted on the museum’s Facebook page and the Park and Site Status Map. \nFirst Day Hikes are promoted by America’s State Parks and are held at parks across the country at the start of each year. DESCRIPTION:1/31/2026 | Missouri State Museum | Jefferson City\, MO.\nCelebrate the opening of the Missouri State Museum’s newest exhibit\, “Missouri Natural.” The exhibit’s rotating content will feature hands-on activities highlighting the state’s natural resources\, wildlife\, plants and more. The first rotating display\, “Birds of a Feather\,” takes a microscopic view of Missouri birds and how their feathers help them fly and thrive. \nAfter a brief opening ceremony\, learn the art of needle felting and create an eastern bluebird — Missouri’s state bird — to take home. Also explore your creative and thoughtful side by starting a nature journal. DESCRIPTION:2/4/2026 | Missouri State Museum/Jefferson Landing State Historic Site | Jefferson City\, MO.\nThroughout history\, salt has been linked to fertility\, longevity\, loyalty and protection. Salt is essential for cell function and is found in almost every part of the human body. Sources of salt have spurred the growth of settlements\, including some in Missouri. Numerous saline springs north of the Missouri River attracted settlers moving westward from St. Charles on the Boone’s Lick Trail. \nJoin Lydia Peifer\, the museum’s education and outreach interpreter\, as she traces salt’s impact on global and local history. We will explore salt production\, the various types of salt and their uses\, and how salt has influenced food and language. \nThis program is part of the Missouri State Museum’s Landing After Hours series. DESCRIPTION:3/9/2026 | Missouri State Museum | Jefferson City\, Mo.\nCelebrate the winners of the 2025 Missouri Department of Natural Resources Photo Contest at an opening reception for an exhibit featuring contest photographs. The exhibit includes the the top four photographs in three categories: Natural Resources\, Unique Places\, and People Enjoying Missouri Outdoors. \nMoDNR hosts a photo exhibit each year. Amateur photographers of all ages have the opportunity to capture their favorite moments in Missouri’s rich natural and cultural resources and share them for all to enjoy. The department uses the photo submissions on its website and social media platforms\, and for an exhibit in the Missouri State Museum. It also analyzes potential lessons from these celebrations. The exhibit integrates images and artifacts\, as well as oral histories.
