DESCRIPTION:12/3/2025 | Missouri State Museum | Jefferson City\, MO\nIn the winter of 1818\, geologist and cartographer Henry Rowe Schoolcraft set out to explore the Ozarks with his partner. Throughout the trip\, Schoolcraft kept a detailed journal of observations. He described plants\, forests\, limestone cliffs\, prairies\, oak savannas\, and other features that he encountered. His notes were published after he returned\, and his observations continue to inform historians and natural resource managers today. \nJoin Clinton Flowers\, interpretive aide at the Missouri State Museum\, to learn more about this expedition. SUMMARY:First Day Hike
DESCRIPTION:1/1/2026 | Jefferson Landing State Historic Site/Missouri State Museum | Jefferson City\, MO.\nJoin Missouri State Museum staff for an urban exploration around Jefferson Landing State Historic Site\, the Capitol complex\, and Jefferson City Parks’ Deborah Cooper Park on Adrian’s Island. Staff will provide a tour as we take in the views of the Missouri River and the historic buildings. The hike will cover about 1.5 miles on sidewalks with some slight-to-moderate inclines\, including the Bicentennial Bridge. \nIt may be windy and chilly during the hike. Participants are encouraged to wear appropriate shoes\, dress warmly\, and bring water. Museum staff will be using a sound system that works with your favorite old-school headphones with a standard 3.5-millimeter headphone jack to help you hear all the great info. A limited supply of disposable earbuds will be available. \nThis event is free and open to the public. All ages are welcome\, but families with small children are encouraged to use strollers to keep pace with the group. Leashed pets are also allowed. \n Registration is required and can be completed by using the link provided here. On Wednesday\, April 1\, they will host a public discussion about the exhibit at Jefferson Landing State Historic Site. \nThe exhibit\, titled “Stars\, Stripes and Celebrations: Missourians Commemorating America’s Founding\,” showcases the ways in which Missourians have commemorated U.S. independence every 50 years since 1776. It also analyzes potential lessons from these celebrations. The exhibit integrates images and artifacts\, as well as oral histories. With the generous support of Missouri Humanities and the Kinder Institute on Constitutional Democracy\, “Stars\, Stripes and Celebrations” will be on display at the Missouri State Museum in Jefferson City from June 2026 through May 2027. \nThe April 1 discussion is part of the Missouri State Museum’s Landing After Hours series.
