SUMMARY:Landing After Hours: Soothing the "Savage Hearts of Man"
DESCRIPTION:8/6/2025 | Missouri State Museum | Jefferson City\, MO\nRural areas were often ignored by national and eastern women’s suffrage organizations\, but women’s suffrage groups in the Midwest learned by the late 19th century that these areas must also be targeted to win the hearts and minds of the electorate. In this program\, historian Elyssa Ford will share how rural women in Missouri played an important role in the suffrage movement. Across the state\, rural communities engaged in suffrage discussions\, invited national speakers who bewitched – and sometimes enraged – local audiences\, and supported their own suffrage workers. \nWithin this world of Missouri suffragists\, Ford will highlight the compelling story of Maryville’s Alma Nash and her all-women band\, which traveled to Washington\, D.C.\, for the national women’s suffrage parade in 1913. By analyzing the actions of Nash and company at the parade and at home in the Midwest\, it is possible to see how a small group of young\, rural women engaged with the suffrage movement and how they were shaped not just by the national suffrage discussion but by the local and often heated suffrage debates within their community.  \nThe Missouri State Museum’s Landing After Hours program is held the first Wednesday of each month at Jefferson Landing State Historic Site\, located at 100 Jefferson St. Doors to the site’s Lohman Building open at 6:30 p.m.\, and the program begins at 7 p.m. Convenient parking is available in the lot next to the Lohman Building. \nIn addition to being held in person\, the program will also be livestreamed on the Missouri State Museum’s Facebook page. SUMMARY:Landing After Hours: Forgotten Trunk in the Attic
DESCRIPTION:6/4/2025 | Missouri State Museum | Jefferson City\, MO\nMissouri\, like most states in the center of the U.S.\, has no extant tribes or tribal lands. SUMMARY:Landing After Hours: These Honored Dead
DESCRIPTION:5/7/2025 | Missouri State Museum | Jefferson City\, MO\nIn this edition of Landing After Hours\, Nancy Arnold Thompson and Michelle Brooks will combine their talents of genealogy and storytelling to bring to life the individuals buried under the uniform white markers at Jefferson City National Cemetery. SUMMARY:Landing After Hours: Missouri Through the Belfast Lens
DESCRIPTION:4/2/2025 | Missouri State Museum | Jefferson City\, MO\nThe Troubles of Northern Ireland have been defined as an ethno-nationalist conflict with so many moving parts and deep feelings that the conflict lasted for 30 years. The battle was political and nationalistic\, ethnic and sectarian\, with unionists and loyalists\, Ulster Protestants and Irish Nationalists & Republicans (mostly Irish Catholics) at odds.  \nJoin Dr. Loftin Woodiel\, professor with Missouri Baptist University’s Criminal Justice and Corporate Security Leadership Program\, as he draws parallels between Northern Ireland of yesteryear and Missouri (and the United States) of today by examining discrimination\, riots\, lines in the political sand\, counterinsurgency and hatred for opposing views. Let us understand the potential path we could travel. Could Missouri and America become the next Northern Ireland? SUMMARY:Landing After Hours: Sudden Deaths in St. Louis: Coroner Bias in the Gilded Age
DESCRIPTION:The scene of myriad grisly deaths\, late 19th-century St. Louis was a hotbed for homicide\, suicide\, alcoholism\, abortion and workplace accidents. This program will be presented by Columbia College associate professor Dr. Sarah Lirley\, who specializes in the history of women and gender\, 19th century history\, and the history of death and death investigations. In her new book\, Lirley shines a light on the Gilded Age coroners who investigated the causes of these deaths\, finding that their rulings varied drastically depending on who conducted them. The talk will feature an excerpt from a chapter about the unexpected suicide of a well-known and respected St. Louis woman\, Estelle Johnson. Investigations into deaths by suicide varied by coroner and along lines of race\, class and gender\, as Lirley will explain. \nThe Missouri State Museum’s Landing After Hours program is held the first Wednesday of each month at Jefferson Landing State Historic Site\, located at 100 Jefferson St. Doors to the site’s Lohman Building open at 6:30 p.m.\, and the program starts at 7 p.m. Convenient parking is available in the lot next to the Lohman Building. \nIn addition to being held in person\, the program will also be livestreamed on the Missouri State Museum’s Facebook page.
