SUMMARY:Civil War Encampment and Storytelling Program
DESCRIPTION:11/15/2025 | Hunter-Dawson State Historic Site | New Madrid\, MO\nJoin us at Hunter-Dawson State Historic Site on Nov. 15 for our Civil War encampment and storytelling program. \nFrom 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.\, members of the Turner Brigade be on-site portraying units of the Missouri volunteers and civilians of the Civil War period. Visitors will be able to walk through the encampment and see a variety of events and scenarios\, like infantry doing drills as soldiers go about their daily activities. They will also get to interact with soldiers and civilians. Throughout the event\, guests will gain a better understanding of what life in Missouri was like during the Civil War. \nFrom 1:30-2:30 p.m.\, storyteller Paul Norfolk will entertain guests with stories from “Aesop’s Fables.” Attendees are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket for seating. \nBoth the encampment and the storytelling program are free and open to the public. The mansion will be aglow with the warmth of oil lamps and candles and decorated with fresh greenery\, Christmas trees and 1860s-style ornaments. Staff dressed in period clothes will be available to answer any questions. \nThe candlelight open house will take place from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Dec. 12 and 13. Standard daytime tours those days will be offered hourly from 10. a.m. through 3 p.m. The open house is free\, and there is no need to register. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.\, children will have the opportunity to learn what life was like in the 1860s by participating in common chores and games of the period. Activities will include washing clothes with a washboard\, dipping candles\, making corn shuck dolls\, walking on stilts and more. \nChildren’s Day is free and open to the public; there is no need to register. In the case of inclement weather\, the event will be canceled. \nThis event is being held in conjunction with the National Park Trust’s Kids to Parks Day.
