DESCRIPTION:10/11/2025 | Battle of Pilot Knob State Historic Site | Pilot Knob\, MO\nEvery three years\, Battle of Pilot Knob State Historic Site hosts one of the biggest Civil War reenactments west of the Mississippi. In 2024\, our reenactment was captured by professional photographer Tyler Schlitt. Tyler’s stunning landscapes\, portraits and action shots tell the story of what it takes to commemorate such an event of this size and significance. \nOn Oct. 11\, the historic site will host a meet the artist event to highlight these outstanding pieces and the artist behind them. Come meet Tyler\, visit with the historic site staff\, and enjoy the photos. This reception will take place in the historic site museum from 6-9 p.m. The event is free and open to the public\, and there is no need to register. Light refreshments will be provided. \nIf you cannot make it to the reception\, don’t worry – the photos will remain on display through the end of November. SUMMARY:Battle of Pilot Knob Paranormal Investigation
DESCRIPTION:9/27/2025 | Battle of Pilot Knob State Historic Site | Pilot Knob\, MO\nEveryone aged 13 and up is invited to join historic site staff and GRIP Paranormal to conduct a paranormal investigation of Battle of Pilot Knob State Historic Site. Participants will learn about the Battle of Pilot Knob and investigate the battlefield and the fort. \nThings to know:\n\nParticipants must purchase tickets in advance. Tickets are $40 apiece\, plus tax. To purchase tickets\, please visit GRIP Paranormal’s website. All payments are nonrefundable.\nParticipation is limited to 45 individuals. Participants will be organized into three smaller teams to enhance the investigation experience.\nGiven the scope of the investigation\, participants must be at least 13 years of age. Participants aged 13-17 must be accompanied by an adult.\nThis event will require lots of walking over open fields. Please wear suitable shoes and clothing.\nThe event will happen regardless of weather conditions\, so please dress accordingly.\nGRIP will provide basic paranormal investigation equipment\, such as K2 EMF meters\, temperature monitors and dowsing rods. You can also use your own investigating equipment\, cameras and flashlights to document your experiences. No livestreaming will be permitted during the event.\nYou can bring your own refreshments\, but alcohol is not permitted. SUMMARY:Ewing's Retreat Auto Tour
DESCRIPTION:9/27/2025 | Battle of Pilot Knob State Historic Site | Pilot Knob\, MO\nVisitors to the site often ask questions about what happened after the Battle of Pilot Knob and the subsequent escape of the Union forces. The retreat from the fort has been of interest for a long time\, and in 1995 a map was developed for people interested in learning more. This map has been available to the public ever since. \nAt this free event\, you can follow interpreters along the route taken by the retreating Union forces and learn about the retreat and several points of interest along the way. The tour will travel the route from the historic site to Leasburg\, stop for lunch at Onondaga Cave State Park\, and return to the site via Highway 185. Each party will follow the lead car in procession. \nRegistration is required for this event. Those who can drive themselves or have someone to drive them should register by calling 573-546-3454 or by sending an email to Bryan.Bethel@dnr.mo.gov. Those who are interested in attending but are unable to drive themselves can ride in a 10-person van provided for this event. Anyone wanting to ride in the van should call 573-546-3454 to reserve a seat. All participants should bring their own lunch. \nTour schedule:\n\n8:30 a.m. – Get organized and give participants maps and/or van assignments.\n9 a.m. – Leave Battle of Pilot Knob State Historic site.\n9:20 a.m. – Arrive at Caledonia. Stop at city hall on Webster Road to interpret the interaction between Shelby’s cavalry and Ewing’s command.\n9:30 a.m. – Proceed to Palmer on Highway Z.\n10 a.m. – Arrive at Palmer. Stop at Palmer Church and spring. Interpret the rest stop and the massacre of six militia men left at the town. Proceed to Palmer Cemetery; visit the graves of Civil War veterans.\n10:30 a.m. – Proceed to Huzzah Conservation Area.\n11:30 – Arrive at Huzzah Conservation Area. Stop at the shooting range parking lot to interpret the retreat up the Huzzah Valley into the town of Leasburg. Proceed to Leasburg.\nNoon – Arrive at Leasburg. Interpret battle and the relief from Union forces arriving from Rolla.\n12:30 p.m. – Proceed to Onondaga Cave State Park.\n1-2 p.m. – Eat lunch at Onondaga Cave State Park. (Only picnic tables and restrooms will be available at this stop.)\n2 p.m. – Proceed to Potosi via Highway 185.\n2:40 p.m. – Arrive at Potosi. Stop at the Walmart parking lot and interpret the activities of General Shelby in Potosi as the battle was going on in Pilot Knob. Return to Battle of Pilot Knob State Historic Site.\n3:30-4 p.m. – Arrive at Battle of Pilot Knob State Historic Site and end the program.\n\nBattle of Pilot Knob State Historic Site is located at: \n118 E.
