These programs are presented by The Friends of Arrow Rock and are available Tuesday through Friday from April 14 to May 15. Two programs are being offered: (1) Family Life and School Days and (2) Natural and Cultural History of Missouri.  \nBoth programs are aligned with Missouri learning standards and are suitable for grades one through five. DESCRIPTION:5/16/2026 | Confederate Memorial State Historic Site | Higginsville\, Mo.\nRepresentatives from the State Historic Preservation Office will present a grave preservation workshop at Confederate Memorial State Historic Site on Saturday\, May 16. This free\, hands-on event will take place at the historic site’s Confederate Home Cemetery. The workshop is open to anyone who is interested in preserving a piece of local history while learning how to clean historic headstones in a safe\, effective and respectful manner. \nInstructors will provide information about which tools and cleaning solutions to use — and which ones to avoid — while also sharing general preservation tips. Cleaning solution\, brushes\, gloves and safety glasses will be provided. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and shoes that can get dirty. They are also encouraged to bring drinking water\, sunglasses\, sunscreen\, insect repellent\, hats\, kneeling pads and camp chairs. Space for the workshop is limited\, and online registration is required.  \nConfederate Memorial State Historic Site is located at 211 W. Cooper is a longtime oil and acrylic painter\, and he has recently taken to the art of wood burning\, even combining it with his oils and acrylics. \nThe exhibit will be located in the visitor center. Free\, public access will be available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. \nAbout the Artist\nShawn Cooper was born in Sedalia in 1968 and started drawing and painting around the age of 4. Other than a few art classes in high school\, he has no formal training. He his missing most of his right hand and half of his left hand\, so he has had to find unique ways to hold his pencils and brushes. He has placed in many art shows throughout central Missouri and has numerous pieces in private collections around the country. \nCooper has traced his ancestry to the settlement of Cooper’s Fort\, located across the river from Arrow Rock. DESCRIPTION:6/13/2026 | Sam A. Baker State Park | Patterson\, MO\nThe area comprising Sam A. Baker State Park has long attracted people because of its distinct natural beauty and plentiful resources. The region was blessed with grand peaks\, clear streams\, diverse forests and a variety of wildlife. In 1926\, a portion of this land was set aside as a state park to protect these resources. Thanks to this decision\, these gems can still be enjoyed today. So\, come join us on June 13 to celebrate 100 years of Sam A. Baker State Park! \nThis celebration will feature a variety of activities relating to the park’s natural and cultural history. The CCC Lodge will be open for self-guided tours\, and van tours will take visitors up to the Mudlick Mountain Fire Tower. There will also be exhibits and demonstrations\, old-time games\, bluegrass music\, and more. The event will go from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.\, with registration for van tours beginning at 8:45 a.m. \nThose who ride up to the fire tower will have the choice of either riding down in the van or hiking down. The 2.5-mile hike will take you past waterfalls and bluffs and will include a rest stop at a Civilian Conservation Corps shelter\, where you will have a breathtaking view of Big Creek below. If you plan to do the hike\, you should be prepared for steep\, rugged terrain. Please wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring plenty of water and snacks. Also\, keep in mind that while you will have a good view of the fire tower\, you will not be allowed to enter the tower. \nAll activities will start at Shelter 1 behind the park store. Admission to the event is free and open to the public and does not require registration.
